Caney Creek Area Just like the Buckeye-Caney Creek map, the Caney Creek Area map covers the Buckeye and Caney Creek Trails in southwest Arkansas. The difference is the scale and areal extent. The Caney Creek Area map extends all the way to Hwy 375 at Shady AR and shows the access roads to the trailhead (hey, if you can't find it, you can't hike it). Because more area is shown, the scale is smaller. That said, both maps use the same base maps (the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles) and use the same GPS data to render the trails, so if you have good eyes, you can see the same detail on this map as you can on the Buckeye-Caney Creek version. The bottom line is if you are trying to find the trail and don’t need the full scale, use this one. If you have good eyes, this map might be just as good for you as the other. However, if you want the easiest map to read and are more concerned about the twists and turns of the trail rather than the access roads, use the Buckey-Caney Creek Trail map. |

The Map: Nominal (very nominal) 1:24,000 based on USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle topographic maps. Printed in color on 11x17, "Rite in the Rain” all weather writing paper. All trails were mapped with a WAAS enabled GPS and are designated in red. Forest roads are in gray. Other features include trailheads, segment mileage, general directions, waypoints and waypoint coordinates. Because of the smaller scale, the inset map shown on the Buckeye-Caney Creek Trail map was not necessary. The Caney Creek Trail Hike: See Buckeye-Caney Creek Trail map. Directions to West Caney Creek Trailhead: Take State Hwy 375 southeast from Mena AR to Shady. Follow County 81 south for 5 mile (this is the only sign for the turnoff). Turn left at sign for trailhead access. Directions to Buckeye and East Caney Creek Trailhead: Take State Hwy 375 southeast from Mena AR to Shady where it becomes County 64/Forest Road 25. After 4.6 miles, Co 64 splits from FR 25 and joins FR 38. Go south on Co 64/FR 38 for 3.8 miles to the Buckeye Trailhead or 4.9 to the East Caney Creek Trailhead. The roads from Hwy 375 are gravel but driveable in a normal car. The turns are well marked with signs to Shady Lake , which is south on FR 38. Both trailheads are marked.
